Hely-Hutchinson, Victor - The First Nowell

Victor Hely-Hutchinson (1901-47) was a British composer, conductor and pianist. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa, then moved back to England in 1910. He studied at Oxford University and the Royal College of Music. During his career he was Professor of Music at Birmingham University, succeeding Granville Bantock, and became Director of Music for the BBC, succeeding Arthur Bliss. He wrote his popular 'Carol Symphony' in 1927. The third movement of which features The Coventry Carol and The First Nowell, arranged here for trombone quartet by Helen Vollam.
