Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) was a Ukrainian composer, conductor and teacher who specialized in writing a cappella choral music.
‘Carol of the Bells’, composed in 1904 although not premiered until 1916, is based on a traditional folk song of Ukrainian origin entitled ‘ Shchedryk ’, meaning ‘Bountiful’. It was originally sung in Ukrainian villages on January 13th (New Year’s Eve on the Julian calendar) and the original words tell the tale of a swallow flying into a household to predict good fortune and a bountiful year ahead. This arrangement for trombone quartet is by Jayne Murrill.
