German composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) is best known for his opera 'Hansel and Gretel' which is loosely based on the fairy-tale by the Brothers Grimm. The premiere of the opera was conducted by Richard Strauss in 1893. Earlier in his career Humperdinck assisted Richard Wagner in the production of 'Parsifal' in Bayreuth in 1881, and was also music tutor to Wagner's son Siegfried.
