Borodin, Alexander - Dance of the Polovtsian Maidens

£12.00

Alexander Porfirevich Borodin (1833-87) was a scientist and an amateur composer. He was a member of ‘The Five’ or ‘The Mighty Handful’, a term given to the composers Balakirev, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov who championed the Russian nationalist style, rather than the more ‘westernized’ style of Tchaikovsky’s music. The opera Prince Igor was written over a span of twenty years, completed after the composer’s death by Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov. It is an old East Slavic tale of Prince Igor and the invasion by Polovtsian tribes in 1185. The Dance of the Polovtsian Maidens was made famous again when it was used for the song Stranger in Paradise from the 1953 musical Kismet.
